How it was found
The recall started after a sample collected and analyzed by The Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station showed elevated levels of lead, according to the notice. The notice doesn’t say how much lead was found. No illnesses have been reported to date.
What FDA says about lead
In the notice’s own words: “Short-term exposure to very low levels of lead may not elicit any symptoms. Increased blood lead levels may be the only apparent sign of lead exposure.” It adds that effects depend on the amount and duration of exposure and on a person’s age and body weight, and that “if a child is exposed to enough lead for a prolonged period of time, such as weeks to months, permanent damage to the central nervous system may occur.”
Our read: cinnamon keeps showing up in lead recalls
This is our analysis. This is the second ground cinnamon lead recall we’ve covered this month, after Lior Cinnamon Ground Seasoning on October 12. Ground spices are easy to forget in the back of a cabinet, and this one was distributed over more than nine months.
Reality check
The notice gives no lead level, so there’s no way to say how much is in a given jar. What you can do is simple: check the UPC and date, and if it matches, it goes.
The close
Cinnamon lasts forever in the cabinet.
This jar shouldn’t. Check the label tonight.
