Why FDA is warning parents
According to FDA’s October 30 advisory, the reports describe toddlers suffering complete airway obstruction with the inability to breathe after eating the bars. FDA says that when chewed, the bar reportedly forms a dry, sticky mass that standard choking interventions, including back blows and the Heimlich maneuver, “may fail to dislodge.” FDA says some reported incidents required emergency response and hospital observation.
FDA says it told the company about the reports and the company agreed to start a recall. In its own release, posted the evening of October 30, Once Upon a Farm called it a voluntary recall “due to potential choking hazard for toddlers ages 1.5 – 2.5” and said the decision was based on three consumer complaints. Costco’s letter also cites three consumer reports. The company says it is reformulating the bars.
Where it was sold
FDA says the bars are sold nationwide online and in stores “including Costco, Target, and Walmart,” and may also be sold on Amazon.com and by other third-party sellers. The company says they were distributed online and to stores in AL, AR, AZ, CA, CO, CT, DE, FL, GA, HI, IA, ID, IL, IN, KS, KY, LA, MA, MD, ME, MI, MN, MO, MS, MT, NC, NE, NH, NJ, NV, NY, OH, OK, OR, PA, RI, SC, SD, TN, TX, UT, VA, VT, WA and WI, plus Puerto Rico.
Who’s behind the brand
Once Upon a Farm is a Berkeley, California, kids’ food company that went public on the New York Stock Exchange in February. Actor Jennifer Garner joined as a co-founder in 2017 and sits on its board, CNBC reported at the time of the IPO. She is not quoted in the recall materials.
Our read: a recall that covers everything
This is our analysis. Most food recalls send you hunting for a lot code. This one doesn’t. FDA’s advice applies to every flavor, every size and every date, so there’s nothing to check. If it says Tractor Wheels, it goes. The two counts in play, FDA’s “several reports” and the company’s three complaints, come from different sources, and neither says how many bars were sold.
Reality check
A recall is not a finding that every bar is dangerous for every child. It is a call that this product, for this age group, is not worth the risk. The company says its other products are not part of it. If you have questions, FDA’s advisory and the company’s customer care line, 888-983-1606, listed in Costco’s letter, are the places to go.
The close
Tractor Wheels were made for small hands.
Right now, FDA says the safest place for them is the trash.
