MGK’s Owen’s Ginger Ale Is Heading to About 550 Whole Foods Stores. Each Can Has 24 Grams of Sugar.
MGK is an investor in Owen’s, and his ginger ale is heading to Whole Foods. It is a regular sugared mixer, so know what you are pouring.

A mule with a mohawk
You’ll know it by the can. Owen’s mascot, Owen the Mule, gets an MGK makeover with a mohawk, a nose ring and a Cleveland hat, according to BevNET.
MGK is the stage name of Colson Baker. BevNET describes him as an investor in the brand. His name and his look are also on the can.
What we know
- BevNET reports the ginger ale is launching in around 550 Whole Foods Market stores nationwide this fall. That store count comes from BevNET. We haven’t seen it in a Whole Foods or Owen’s announcement
- BevNET says it is designed to be enjoyed straight or used as a mixer
- Owen’s product page went live in early September and pitches the collab around MGK’s “Lost Americana” era
- The can in Owen’s own photos reads “Made with real ginger,” “Caffeine free” and “Highly carbonated”
- The product page lists the ginger ale at $30 but doesn’t say how many cans that buys. Whole Foods shelf prices weren’t available
Designed to be enjoyed straight or used as a mixerThe WellWham perspective
What’s in the can
Per the nutrition panel on Owen’s product page, one 8.5 fl oz (250 mL) can has:
- 90 calories
- 24 grams of sugar
- 24 grams of total carbohydrate
- 5 mg of sodium
- 0 grams of fat and 0 grams of protein
For scale, FDA uses 50 grams a day as the Daily Value for added sugars. The panel doesn’t break out added sugars, so we can’t say how much of the 24 grams counts as added.
Our read: a celebrity soda, not a wellness pick
This is our analysis. Whole Foods keeps adding drinks with famous names attached, from Angry Angel energy drinks to Sweet Logic’s creator-backed cookies. This one is the most honest of the bunch about what it is. Owen’s calls itself a mixer and puts a whiskey ginger recipe right on the product page. If you want ginger ale, it is a ginger ale. If you’re shopping Whole Foods for something better-for-you, the label says this isn’t that.
Reality check
“Made with real ginger” doesn’t make a soda a health drink. At 24 grams of sugar a can, it sits closer to a regular soda than to the low sugar drinks we usually cover. And a famous investor doesn’t change what’s in the can.
The close
The mule got a mohawk.
The recipe didn’t get a makeover. Read the panel before you pour.
