A donut the whole family can eat

Dupe Loops started in a home kitchen, with a founder who has celiac disease and wanted donuts his whole family could eat.

Now they’re on shelves at Sprouts, with Costco next.

Where to find them

Per the October 26 release from Heavenly Hunks:

  • Sprouts now carries all three 4 oz varieties at more than 500 stores: The Babysitter (vanilla glaze and rainbow sprinkles), The Bruce (chocolate frosting) and The Plain Wayne (vanilla glaze).
  • Costco gets The Organic Babysitter, a certified organic 13 oz bag, exclusive to select regions “later this month.” The release doesn’t name the regions.
  • Dupe Loops launched at Target stores and Target.com in September.

The company says the original varieties are Certified Gluten-Free, Certified Glyphosate Free and non-GMO, and that they’re naturally shelf-stable.

Allergen-free makes it a donut more people can share. It's still a donut. The WellWham perspective

The founders

Jordan and Jillian Darling started Dupe Loops in Arizona. Jordan lives with celiac disease and allergies to dairy, soy and nuts, per the release. It began as a dedicated gluten-free food truck in the Scottsdale area, then partnered with Heavenly Hunks, which the release says is sold in about 16,000 stores, to reach national retail.

“It means more families like ours can enjoy a treat they might otherwise have to pass up,” Jordan Darling said.

Our read: allergen-free is going mainstream

This is our analysis. For people with celiac disease, “gluten-free” on a label is only half the question. Certification and how the food is made matter too, which is why shared fryers come up so often. A certified gluten-free donut that also skips dairy, nuts and soy is a treat more people at the party can share.

The reality check

Free from allergens doesn’t make it a health food. It’s a glazed donut with sprinkles, and the release doesn’t list sugar or calories. If you or your kid has celiac disease or food allergies, read the label on the exact bag you buy. The Costco pack is a different, organic product, and the release’s certification details refer to the original varieties.

The close

It started as a donut one family could share.

Now it’s in more than 500 Sprouts stores.
