Three ingredients, one of them tallow

According to the company, MASA chips are made with three ingredients: organic nixtamalized corn, salt and 100% grass-fed and finished beef tallow. There are no seed oils. Tallow is beef fat, so these chips aren’t vegetarian or vegan.

The numbers, per the company

  • Costco: 55 locations across Washington and Oregon, Original flavor, in a larger format
  • Overall: more than 3,000 retail locations, including Sprouts, Erewhon, Wegmans, Whole Foods Market, Target, The Fresh Market and H-E-B
  • Production: more than 400,000 bags a month
  • The brand calls MASA “the #1 selling tortilla chip at select retailers.” It didn’t say which ones

“We’re proud to bring our snacks to Costco members and offer them in a larger format that delivers more value,” Ancient Crunch CEO Steven Rofrano said in the release. The company didn’t give the bag size or price for the Costco version.

Our read: the seed-oil debate is in the warehouse aisle now

This is our analysis. Seed oil-free used to be a niche label at places like Erewhon, which went seed oil-free at its hot bar. Now it’s heading into Costco, a store built on bulk and value. We’ve seen tallow show up in other snacks too, like PRIMA’s peanut butter bar. Costco has become a stop for better-for-you brands, from IQBAR’s Costco-exclusive bites to Sofía Vergara’s coffee.

Reality check

Swapping seed oils for beef tallow changes the fat in the bag. It doesn’t turn a tortilla chip into a health food. The release talks about “healthy, delicious snacking,” but that’s the company’s framing, not evidence. If you’re outside Washington and Oregon, you won’t find MASA at your Costco yet. You can check the brand’s other retailers instead.

The close

Three ingredients in a bag is the pitch.

A bigger bag at 55 Costcos is the news.
