Erin and Sara Foster’s Fund Is Backing Doughy, the Cashew Cookie Dough Now at Target

Doughy’s cashew-based cookie dough is backed by the Foster sisters’ Oversubscribed Ventures, with new flat packs at select Target stores from Nov. 1.

Who’s behind it

Founder and CEO Kelly Ramey started Doughy in her Santa Monica kitchen, according to the company. Its November 2 release names these backers:

  • Oversubscribed Ventures, the fund of Erin and Sara Foster
  • Amok Consumer Growth Fund, led by John Lowe, former CEO of Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams. He says Doughy is Amok’s first CPG investment
  • Bluestein Ventures, where former RXBAR CMO Lindsay Levin is a venture partner
  • Corazon Capital, Quorum Capital Partners and Simple Food Ventures

The release doesn’t disclose investment amounts or stake sizes, or what role the Fosters play beyond investing.

What’s in it, per the brand

Doughy is made without flour, oils or refined sugar, the company says. It says its Chocolate Chip flavor has six ingredients: cashews, maple syrup, chocolate chips, vanilla extract, sea salt and baking soda, with 4 grams of sugar and 65 calories per cookie. The Chocolate Chip flat pack in the company’s launch photo carries an “8 simple ingredients” badge, so check the label on the pack you buy. The packaging says gluten-free, and Lowe calls it “naturally gluten-free” in the release.

Where to find it

The new flat packs debut November 1 in the refrigerated dough aisle at select Target stores nationwide, the company says. Target gets limited-edition holiday flavors Gingerbread, Sugar Cookie and Peppermint Bark, plus Chocolate Chip. Doughy is also sold at Whole Foods Market, Fresh Thyme Market, Wegmans and Erewhon, where the company says it’s the No. 1-selling cookie dough. The release doesn’t say which formats each store carries.

Our read: celebrity money, Erewhon credentials, Target shelves

This is our analysis. Doughy is following a familiar path. Win the Erewhon shopper, collect investors with name recognition, then go wide at Target. The Fosters bring attention, and the Jeni’s and RXBAR names bring operating experience. We saw a similar mix when a creator joined Sweet Logic as it hit Whole Foods. Famous backers aren’t proof the dough is any good. Your taste test is.

Reality check

It’s still cookie dough. Cashews and maple syrup are different ingredients from flour, butter and sugar, but maple syrup is still sugar, and a treat is still a treat. The 4 grams of sugar and 65 calories are the company’s per-cookie figures, so the label is where to check how many cookies you’re eating.

The close

Doughy started in a Santa Monica kitchen.

Now it has the Foster sisters in its corner and a spot in Target’s dough aisle.
