Walgreens Adds GLP-1 Insurance Help and Pharmacist Check-Ins to Its $49 Weight Visits
Walgreens' $49 virtual weight visits now include GLP-1 coverage checks, prior-auth help and pharmacist follow-ups. The drugs themselves cost extra.

The hard part isn't always the prescription
Getting a GLP-1 prescription is one step.
Getting it covered and staying on it are the barriers Walgreens says it’s now targeting.
What's new
According to Walgreens’ October 27 release, the additions are:
- Coverage help: virtual care can now check commercial insurance prescription coverage and complete prior authorizations if needed, and help with self-pay options
- Medicare: patients eligible for CMS’s Medicare GLP-1 Bridge program can connect with virtual providers for help with eligibility, prior authorizations and a treatment plan
- Pharmacist check-ins: after pickup, Walgreens pharmacists will reach out to all patients who start filling a GLP-1 to answer common questions and share educational resources
- A new hub at walgreens.com/GLP-1 with treatment options and costs, manufacturer savings card options for Wegovy (injection and pill), Zepbound and Foundayo through Rx Savings Finder, and products for side effects like nausea and dehydration
The visit is $49. The medication isn't included, and a prescription isn't guaranteed. The WellWham perspective
What stays the same
Walgreens Weight Management visits are $49 with no subscription, and the medication cost isn’t included. A doctor or nurse practitioner can prescribe an FDA-approved GLP-1 if you’re eligible, and Walgreens says a prescription is based on medical evaluation and not guaranteed. People already taking a GLP-1 for weight loss can also use the virtual clinicians for ongoing treatment.
Availability has limits. Per the release, virtual weight care is available in every state except Alabama. For Medicare Bridge patients, it isn’t available in AL, DC, DE, KS, LA, MS, NM, RI or WV. It isn’t offered in Puerto Rico.
Why Walgreens says it's doing this
“Staying on a GLP-1 medication can be challenging for many patients,” said Rick Gates, Walgreens’ chief pharmacy and external affairs officer. In the release, Gates said more than half of patients who begin GLP-1 therapy for weight management stop treatment within a year “for a variety of reasons.” Walgreens didn’t cite a source for that figure.
Our read: the pharmacy chains want the whole GLP-1 process
This is our analysis. A day after Walmart expanded its Better Care Services, Walgreens is pitching itself as the place that handles the paperwork too. Walgreens itself names access, affordability and ongoing support as the barriers. If coverage is what’s stopping you, the insurance and prior-auth help could matter more than the visit itself. The savings-card hub is a guide to manufacturer offers. Walgreens isn’t setting the drug prices.
The reality check
The $49 covers the visit, not the drug. Coverage help doesn’t mean your plan will pay, and a prescription isn’t guaranteed. GLP-1s are prescription medications with side effects, so talk to your doctor about whether one is right for you. Also note the state limits, especially for Medicare Bridge patients.
The close
Getting the prescription was never the only hurdle.
Walgreens now wants to help with the paperwork and the follow-up, too.
